Excerpt from Wanganui Midweek: Making Tracks with Billy Tea, 29 June 2016

"Old Man Winter" is knocking at the door and the snow bunnies are looking towards the mountain in anticipation of fun in the snow. Trampers also enjoy venturing up the mountain, renewing their snowcraft skills in coping with all the conditions that winter can throw at them and taking in the difference the seasons bring to the Park.

A great accommodation base not far from Tongariro National Park, is the Tramping Club's Possum Lodge cottage at Kaitieke Rd, Raurimu. Nine kilometres from National Park, it is in a rural setting overlooking native bush. With two bunk rooms to sleep 10 and room for a few more inside plus space for tents on the lawn for extras, it has a microwave, stove, crockery and cutlery, Zip hot water and a pot belly to heat water for showers after a day on the mountain.

After your evening meal, you can unwind by the lounge fire with a game of cards or browse through the bookcase. Non club members are also able to hire the cottage at very reasonable rates and it is a great place for families to relax away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
